Fruit Tree Pollination

  • Apples: Most apples are not self-fertile and most be cross-pollinated with self-fertile varieties such as Fuji, Gala and Golden Delicious, Granny Smith or other specific variety.
  • Cherries: Sweet cherries and sour (pie) cherries are different species, rarely bloom at the same time, and will not cross-pollinate with one another. With few exceptions, cherries need to be pollinated with Bing, Black Tartarian, Van’s or other specific variety.
  • Pears: Most varieties of pears need to be cross-pollinated with semi-self-fertile varieties such as Bartlett, Bosc, D’Anjou or other specific variety.
  • Persimmons: Most persimmons are self-fertile or should be pollinated with Fuju.
  • Plums: Few varieties of plums are self-fertile and must be cross-pollinated with self-fertile varieties such as Beauty, Burgundy, Catalina, Santa Rosa or other specific variety.
  • Pluots: Pluots need to be cross-pollinated with specific varieties of pluots or plums.
  • Apricots, Figs, Nectarines, Peaches, and Prunes: Most varieties of these species are self-fertile and do not require another pollinator.
  • Citrus: Most citrus fruits are self-pollinating, and some varieties will even set fruit without pollination (another reason they make good indoor plants).
